English

At Redwood Scholars Tuition we acknowledge that reading and writing are two essential skills for life. However, for many children learning to read and write is a difficult experience that results in anxiety and distress for both the child and the parent.
There are three main parts to English learning: Reading - Writing - Speaking and Listening.
We begin by assessing student's reading, comprehension and spelling abilities:
- Reading skill is the process known as decoding - reading words by sight or using phonics, whereas the meaning is irrelevant;
- Comprehension skill assesses the ability to understand and analyse a passage of written text;
- Assessing spelling skills provides us with additional information about how a student recognises sounds and is able to translate (code) them into their graphic equivalents - letters.
To support the learning of English, we use multi-sensory approach to developing reading and writing skills. Through the teaching of decoding, vocabulary building and grammar we are able to build on reading comprehension skills and help your child close the knowledge gap, develop or exceed the skills needed at their level in the classroom.
Following the assessment, we build an individual learning programme made up of a variety of techniques covering the following aspects of the English language:
- Phonics
- Early Reading
- Comprehension
- Grammar
- Sentence Development
- Handwriting and Presentation
- Creative Writing
- Vocabulary
- Spelling
- Punctuation
Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you child shows the signs of delay in reading and/or writing – literacy is the backbone of all other learning and affects progression in other subjects.
